The defect challenge encourages line managers and maintainers to take an intimate look at an asset. It energises their competitive nature and sets their expectations for work quality standards.
It also gives them a look at actual machine condition and workmanship, rather than rely on hearsay, distant observation, metrics, and perception.
Allow 15-20 minutes for the look around. Take a maintainer, supervisor, or anyone else you like, on a walk around the machine. Challenge them to find more defects than you do. You will generally find that they are competitive people, and as they don’t normally do this kind of work, they will get right into it!
Take photos of the defects for the follow up, or write them down on the next page.
Talk to your companion about what you and they have found (see who found more!), and pull together a combined list of defects.
